Connecticut Car Tax Analysis

The purpose of this project was to help readers understand the unique situation in Connecticut where an annual vehicle tax is set by towns. The result is that a person could pay nearly $1,000 more in annual vehicle taxes depending on the location of their vehicle.
For this story, my colleague and I utilized tax rate data from the Connecticut Office of Policy and Management along with vehicle tax assessments provided by a professional assessor. We also downloaded shapefiles from the U.S. Census Bureau to establish town geographies and used those to create an interactive map of tax rates in Flourish. We also created an interactive table that allows readers to view the tax rates for and potential annual tax bills on sample vehicles for all towns in Connecticut.
The result was a story that not only showcases the effects of the car tax but also allows readers to interact with and visualize the data for themselves.
